Our Mission

The Harvard Square Defense Fund is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1979. The HSDF is dedicated to preserving the scale, character, diversity and quality of Harvard Square, the origins of which date back to 1630. Recognizing that change is inevitable, and even desirable, we endeavor to maintain the delicate balance of business, institutional and residential uses which coexist in this unique historical area.

Without the HSDF, Harvard Square would have more tall buildings, more fast-food franchises, more national chain stores, no cap on drinking establishments, more traffic, parking and litter problems, and fewer one-of-a-kind shops.

The HSDF takes an active role in design review of new development and works to enhance the quality and vitality of open spaces and street life to keep the Square safe for residents and visitors. Our role also includes advising and assisting with resource allocation, educating the public about community issues, and encouraging development consistent with our goals. In short, our mission is to preserve and enhance Harvard Square’s unique urban fabric.
