Neighborhood Forum on University Expansion

Representatives of Cambridge Neighborhoods met on Thursday, November 14, 2002, to discuss Harvard expansion and development and determine ways citizens can work together to protect their neighborhoods. See the article in the Harvard Crimson on the meeting. For more information on the meeting or how you can get involved, email info@harvardsdf.org.

90 Mt. Auburn Street

After encountering resistance towards their first design for the site at 90 Mt. Auburn Street, Harvard has returned from the drawing board with a new design that is much more in keeping with the surrounding neighborhood. The university plans to house its collections of rare books in the building.

Yet while the building is a better fit for the neighborhood from a design point of view, its relative lack of public space on the ground level effectively detracts from the vitality of the street life. The Harvard Square Defense Fund has suggested to Harvard that a gallery space be put into the ground floor level; Harvard has agreed to devote approximately 300 square feet to a gallery. While this is laudable, the Defense Fund continues to believe that this is insufficient for contributing to the street life of Harvard Square. If you agree and would like to get involved, or would like more information, email us at info@harvardsdf.org.
